Tyler Stanaland and Brittany Snow announced their breakup after nearly three years of marriage in September 2022. The Pitch Perfect actress and the Selling the OC star first connected in 2018, when he slid into her DMS.
“After time and consideration, Tyler and I have made the difficult decision to separate. This decision was made with love and mutual respect for one another,” Brittany posted on her Instagram account, alongside a black and white photo of the former flames.
The divorce announcement hasn't come as a surprise to many, with many gossip sites reporting trouble in paradise. Some fans believe his behavior on the Selling Sunset spin-off may have contributed to the split. So what went wrong between the real estate broker and the actress?
The Netflix reality star and the Hollywood actress shared a joint statement on Instagram on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 to announce that their marriage is over after two years.
“We have realized we need to take some time and make sure we are each living our most fulfilling and authentic lives. We started this journey as best friends and our relationship will continue to be a priority not only for us but for our dog Charlie. We sincerely appreciate your support and ask for privacy as we navigate this new chapter," the social media post states. The pair have not said anything more about the split.
Tyler Stanaland revealed that he and the Hairspray actress first connected in 2018 when he slid into her Instagram DMs.
“I sent a direct message with the most embarrassing pickup line. A dad joke,” he told The Knot in 2020.
Brittany Snow already knew about the ex-surfer through his social media preference. "My girlfriends and I had an inside joke where my one best friend referred to him as my 'dream boyfriend who lives in Orange County,' but I was never gonna meet him," she added. "And then one day I realized he was following me on Instagram. I got really excited.” By 2019, the pair were engaged.
On Instagram in July 2020, Brittany Snow shared photos from their March wedding. They married just before lockdown due to the global pandemic.
"In early March, before we knew how much we'd miss hugs and live in our sweatpants, I got to marry my favorite person. The whole world shut down a few days later & we were stunned at the timing," she wrote at the time.
"We knew we felt incredibly lucky to have found each other, but we had no idea how lucky it would be to get married right before a monumental time in our history. Everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong that day... but it was absolutely and impossibly perfect. I knew on that day, more than ever before, there was no one else I'd rather hold my hand while in the middle of a (life) hurricane."
During the Netflix Open House on June 23, the 33-year-old broker told E! News that when it came to him and Brittany Snow, "You can't really compare our two worlds." "There's really not much advice that she can give me. What she does is very different," he explained, when promoting the first season of his reality show. "I think what we're doing is actually giving you a look into our real lives."
He was also adamant that Snow would never appear on the show. "As this journey started, I kind of wanted to keep certain parts of my life private," Tyler Stanaland explained. "And as time goes on, maybe that'll be different. But for right now, that was kind of the one thing that made me feel safe embarking on such a strange journey."
Brittany Snow is rumored to have never wanted her husband to appear on the reality TV show. "Brittany never wanted Tyler on the show but he was adamant," a source says. "He wanted to make a name for himself on his own terms."
"They had issues before, but this is the final straw," sources have told outlets.
Another insider revealed that, "They're fully over. All of the girls [on the show] are obsessed with him. He's been trying to be really respectful, but it's taken a toll on his marriage 100 percent."
One of the biggest dramas in the first season on Selling The OC centers around Kayla Cardona and Tyler Stanaland.
Kayla tried to kiss Tyler while the members from The Oppenheim Group office were out of town. She told Tyler that the kiss could be a secret, but Tyler declined. This caused upset in the office, allegedly as it was not the first time it had happened.
"Out of respect for [Kayla], I am just kind of trying to minimize it," Tyler explained later on an episode of the Reality TV with Kate Casey podcast, "and brush past it so that there isn't drama."
Tyler Stanaland noted that he had to “set some hard lines and some boundaries” with Kayla Cardona, confirming that “nothing happened” between them. “It was just … something that, you know, you don’t do to somebody who is married,” he said at the time.
Cardona's version of the story was a bit different “I’m not gonna flirt with someone if I don’t feel like I’m getting flirt[ed] with back,” she told Us Weekly. “I was definitely feeling the reciprocation back.”
The John Tucker Must Die actress did watch the Netflix property show.
“She watched it. I mean, she thought — like everybody else did — it’s entertaining. It’s a lot, but it’s good,” he revealed.
According to an inside source who spoke to Us Weekly, Stanaland likely told the 36-year-old star about filming but “left out details” due to being unaware of what was going to make the final edit.
“No one from the cast knows what’s going to air out and what’s going to be edited out. It’s possible he could’ve left out those intimate details and then for her to find out from someone else, it can certainly cause tension,” the source explains, noting that the X actress may “feel disrespected” if she was blindsided by anything shown on the show.
In an August interview with Us Weekly, Kayla Cardona said that Brittany Snow "should be worried about" Alex Hall. But earlier this month, his colleague and old friend Alex Hall disagreed.
"The only thing that Kayla could do at this point to surprise me is if she got a reality check," Alex told E! News. "I can also assure you that Brittany is not 'worried' about me."
Before the split was announced, there were rumors circulating about them.
“Everyone who knows Tyler and Brittany knows she wasn’t comfortable with the show,” a source told Page Six. “That’s why he did his best to keep his marriage and the show separate, but it only backfired.”
A second insider added, “The show basically destroyed their marriage. Brittany was not happy with what she saw.”
TMZ posted images of Tyler Stanaland getting cosy with his Selling The OC co-star Alex Hall on the day his divorce was announced. Eyewitnesses he was at SOTA in Corona Del Mar for some sushi with friends -- including his cast mate Polly Brindle. Although it doesn't appear they were engaging in PDA, sources say they "seemed more than friendly -- touching each other as they walked out the bar," and at one point he "sniffed Alex."
Hall was seen getting cozy with Stanaland on the show, despite being upset with Kayla for acting in a similarly flirty way. “I don’t regret that. And anything that I did — that I have done on the show that people see — I don’t regret any of it,” she says. However, Hall noted that there have been “apologies that have taken place” since production wrapped.
